With the Indian Ocean stretching beneath us, we’ll explore Koneswaram’s traditions of Shiva worship and Ravana’s devotion. Here, we can pause with a side of Ravana that some travellers may know less about—and listen to what this sacred place means to those who worship here.

Around the sacred Bodhi tree and great stupas, history remains part of people’s daily prayers. We’ll explore the beginnings of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and its connections with Bharat, while taking time to appreciate what these places mean to the families who worship here today.
2. Polonnaruwa
Shared histories, written in stone
Among royal remains, Buddha sculptures and Shiva temples, we’ll explore the people and kingdoms that shaped this ancient capital. From Chola involvement to the Sinhala rulers who followed, I’ll help you connect the surviving monuments with a history of exchange, conflict, devotion and creativity across the sea.
3. Kandy · Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
What a sacred place means to its people
For those who come here to pray, this temple holds a deeply personal meaning. We’ll explore the traditions surrounding the sacred Tooth Relic, its place in Sri Lanka’s royal history and the devotion that continues around us. There is much to understand here—and much to quietly observe.

Sigiriya makes you stop and wonder: how did people imagine and create something like this? Through its gardens, art and royal remains, we’ll explore the ambitions and skills behind this remarkable place. 5. Nuwara Eliya & the Tea Highlands

As we travel into the cool hills, take in the tea-covered slopes and enjoy a warm cup together. We’ll explore how tea changed this landscape and the lives of its communities, including the Tamil families whose histories are woven into the highlands. Behind the beautiful views are human stories worth hearing.

I lived in Sri Lanka for several years, and this island holds a special place in my life. With more than a decade of research into Bharat’s history and heritage, I look forward to sharing its deeper connections with you: the living Ramayana, the beginnings of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, Tamil Sangam literature, and the roles of the Cholas and Pandyas in the island’s history.

Together, we’ll explore places where the Ramayana lives through local devotion, walk among ancient capitals, encounter Buddhist teachings and trace the histories connecting Bharat and Sri Lanka. Along the way, there will be green hills, regional vegetarian food, time beside the sea and conversations that bring the places closer to us.
Having lived in Sri Lanka for several years, Chandru brings personal familiarity with the island alongside his research into history and civilisational connections. Through monuments, literature, inscriptions and living traditions, he helps you understand what the evidence reveals—and why these places still matter to people today.
Day 1 · Across the Sea, Into a Familiar Story
Our journey begins with an early-morning arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport. After breakfast and time to freshen up, we travel towards Chilaw.
At Munneswaram, we explore the local tradition of Rama offering prayers to Shiva after the war. Nearby, Manavari carries the tradition of Rama establishing a Shiva lingam. These visits begin our conversation about how sacred stories become part of a country’s living landscape.
After lunch, we continue to Anuradhapura, settle into our hotel and rest. Over dinner, Chandru introduces the island and the stories we will explore together.
Day 2 · An Ancient Capital, a Living Faith
Around Anuradhapura’s sacred tree and great stupas, the past remains part of people’s daily prayers.
We visit Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya and a selected monastic complex—Abhayagiri or Jetavanarama. Together, we explore the beginnings of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, the traditions of Mahinda and Sanghamitta, and the connections between faith, learning and royal patronage.
This is a considered introduction to the ancient city, with time to appreciate selected places. Afterwards, we travel to Trincomalee for dinner and rest.
Day 3 · Shiva’s Sanctuary Above the Sea
At Tirukoneswaram Temple, the ocean stretches below us while worship continues around us. We make time for devotion and explore the temple’s Tamil Shaiva traditions, its associations with Ravana and the maritime history of Trincomalee.
At Kanniya Hot Springs, we encounter another place where local stories and sacred memory meet. After lunch and a brief coastal pause, we travel inland to Habarana.
We stay here for two nights, giving us a settled base for the next stage of our journey.
Day 4 · Among Kings, Monasteries and Shiva Temples
Today belongs to Polonnaruwa, where royal remains, Buddhist monuments and Hindu temples open a conversation about the island’s changing kingdoms.
Our selected visits include the Royal Palace remains, Council Chamber, Sacred Quadrangle, Gal Vihara and a Shiva temple. With Chandru, we explore Chola involvement, subsequent Sinhala rulers, artistic expression and the connections that brought people and ideas across the sea.
We also consider how water shaped the life of this city, with a pause beside Parakrama Samudra as time permits. Travel between monument groups is by vehicle, with walking and rest breaks.
Day 5 · Sigiriya: The Imagination of a Kingdom
We begin early at Sigiriya, exploring its gardens, art and extraordinary royal setting. Who imagined this place? How was it built? What can its surviving remains tell us about ambition, skill and power?
Guests comfortable with the demanding ascent can climb the rock. An accompanied lower-level programme will be arranged for those who prefer not to climb.
After lunch and time to recover, we travel to Kandy and settle in for a quiet evening.
Day 6 · A Sacred Relic and the Road Into the Hills
At the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, we explore the place of the relic in Buddhist devotion and Sri Lanka’s royal history. We also make room for the quieter question of what this sacred place means to those who come here to pray.
The road then takes us into the highlands. At Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple in Ramboda, we encounter local Ramayana traditions and reflect on Hanuman’s devotion, courage and service.
A tea-country stop introduces the landscape and the lives of the communities who have shaped it, before we continue to Nuwara Eliya.
Day 7 · Sita’s Story, Ravana’s Landscape
We begin with a short visit to Gayathri Peedam, subject to opening arrangements, before continuing to Sita Amman Temple.
Many of us grew up hearing about Sita in Ashoka Vatika. Here, we spend time with the local tradition and the courage and hope that make her story so personal to devotees.
At Divurumpola, traditionally associated with Sita’s Agni Pariksha, we reflect on her dignity, suffering and strength, making room for both devotion and questions.
We continue towards Ella and pause at Ravana Falls, where the landscape carries another strand of the island’s storytelling.
Day 8 · From the Hills to the Southern Sea
After breakfast, we leave the hills and travel to the southern coast, with a comfort stop along the way.
Following lunch and check-in, the afternoon is set aside for you. Enjoy the sea breeze, spend time with your family, relax beside the hotel pool or swim where local conditions and supervision permit.
There is no scheduled sightseeing this afternoon. After days of discovery, this is time to rest, share your favourite moments and simply enjoy being here.
Day 9 · One Last Sacred Encounter
After breakfast, we travel towards Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara. Its Buddhist traditions and artwork offer a final opportunity to reflect on the island’s faith and history.
We also visit the Vibhishana shrine, bringing our encounters with Sri Lanka’s living Ramayana traditions to a close.
From Kelaniya, we continue directly to Bandaranaike International Airport for our evening or late-night return flight—with stories, questions and memories to carry home.

- Arrival and departure: This route requires an early arrival on Day 1 and an evening or late-night flight on Day 9. Confirm the designated flights before booking.
- Walking and pace: This is an active touring journey with road transfers, uneven surfaces and temple steps. Sigiriya’s summit climb is optional; please discuss mobility requirements with us.
- Food: The journey is vegetarian. Jain, no-onion-no-garlic and other dietary requirements must be discussed and confirmed before booking.
- Beach time: The southern-coast afternoon is reserved for relaxation. Sea swimming depends on local conditions and safety advice.
